Welcome, and a Big Hello to The People in My House!
The People In My House is a memoir that tells the story of growing up in a dysfunctional home with my mother who comes from Appalachia and has an undiagnosed personality disorder, and my father who was twenty years older than my mother, and even older than my maternal grandparents. Yes, you will probably need a chalkboard for my unusual family tree. My story also tells of how my husband, who I met at the University of Kentucky, committed mortgage fraud that landed him and four of his co-conspirators in prison, and changed my life forever.
I wrote this book to give a voice to my experiences and help others who might be vulnerable in the same way that I was. I’ve read countless journals authored by psychologists and have received counseling by many to help make sense of my formative years, and the impact of my husband’s criminal actions. The information has proved to be invaluable. What’s also invaluable are the personal stories from people I can relate to. There’s something about reading a story from someone who’s “been there,” I’ve been there.
I don’t have a writing background and never thought someone like me with dyslexia could write a book. College was an incredible challenge, but I mastered the art of compensating. Being determined to write my story and without a computer, I wrote my book was on my iPad and IPhone.
Mark has an English degree from Reed College and has been in the thoroughbred industry for decades. Mark had no problem making it through college. He also has an interesting family background, but in an entirely different way. His parents, John and Faith Hubley, were internationally famous animators and Oscar award winners. Needless to say, Mark and I were an unlikely match to collaborate on a book, but here we are!
I hope you’ll join me as I share more details of my story, and maybe you will share some of yours!
